What is it?

This training course is designed to equip teachers in the classroom. This includes helping them gain knowledge regarding the application of pedagogy skills, development of music understanding in babies and toddlers (from birth to 3 years), and also learning and applying theories in music learning.

What can teachers expect from it?

Teachers can expect to learn teaching strategies and apply them in their day-to-day classes. They will also learn to use the E-S-I (Experience, Stimulation, and Intellectual) approach so as to allow babies and toddlers to be more creative, expressive, and imaginative. Skill sets like managing music resources, organisational skills as well as applying child development theories into the performing arts program will be taught during the course.

How are teachers assessed?

There are two kinds of assessments for teachers – formative assessments and summative assessments.

As part of the formative assessment, the trainer will ask a series of questions during the training sessions as well as conduct learning activities at the end of every chapter to assess the teacher’s understanding. Small group presentations, case studies, and role plays are also included under formative assessment.

As for summative assessments, practical assignments are given to assess the understanding and application skills of the teacher. The teacher will also be assessed based on their planning of music activities that aids in the development of the children, as well as how well they apply teaching strategies for a lesson.

  1. Elements of music: participants will experience music concepts through various musical activities.
  2. Creative arts theories: participants will review different learning theories and apply to strategies.
  3. Creative strategies: participants will learn different strategies to engage babies and toddlers in musical interactions and to build music appreciation.
  4. Music approaches: participants will learn different music pedagogy of Orff, Kodaly, Dalcroze, Suzuki.
  5. Core principals of music teaching approaches: Orff, Kodaly, Dalcroze, Suzuki Music philosophies
  6. Musical growth from birth to three year-old: participants will learn the different milestones of babies’ and toddlers’ music development.
  7. Age-appropriate musical interactions: participants will learn to use a variety of resources to ignite children’s musical imagination, musical memory, and musical exploration.
  8. Music resources: participants will learn various resource mediums as accompaniments to music making.
  9. Designing classroom environment to support the development of music learning: participants will learn the components needed to create a conducive environment for music interactions.
  10. Musical equipment and Music Play Centre: participants will learn about Music Play Centre and its significance, the symbolic value and affordances of musical equipments and toys.
  11. Methods of observation: participants will learn the various methods of Observation and how to apply these methods to the music classroom.
  12. Areas of observation: participants will learn how to stimulate and observe babies’ and toddlers’ musical growth through express, create, and appreciate. Role playing in small groups that show a specific area of observation.
  13. Crafting learning outcomes and objectives: participants will learn the fundamentals of crafting effective learning outcomes and objectives for lesson plan design.
  14. Practical assignment task: requirements and tasks specifications.
  15. Reflective practice: importance and benefits of reflective practice.
  16. Review of implementation: participants share with fellow peers on the implementation of their assignments.
